Write a Blog Post Today

Eileen suffering from writer's block.

I’ve been a naughty blogger. I don’t know about you, but it’s been hard for me to find the time and inspiration to write a blog post. I always write it off as a low priority. While it may not be at the very top of my list, here are three reasons it merits more attention.

1.    eMarketer predicts by 2014 the blogosphere will reach 60% of internet users, or 150 million people. That’s a huge amount of people you’re ignoring by deciding that your blog can wait. People like frequent blog updates they can count on. Decide a reasonable frequency for you. Maybe your blog is bi-weekly, or maybe it’s monthly. Whatever you decide, just stick to it!

2.    Blogging increases Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, for your brand and your website. The constant creation of content makes you show up higher on search engines. Also, don’t neglect trackbacks and hyperlinks when you blog. Interconnectivity is key to SEO.

3.    Blogs started it all! That’s right, folks! Facebook and Twitter’s updates are knock-offs of the original weblogs. When we think of building relationships through social media we think of the giants: Facebook and Twitter. However, you can link to other relevant bloggers through your blog and leave thoughtful comments to become a part of a blog community in your niche.

You’re probably wondering what you should write about. This can be an issue whether you’re a beginner or a pro. Here are some suggestions for blog posts when the creative juices aren’t flowing they way you’d like.

1.    Write about one thing you learned that day. Even if it’s something small like an AP Style rule, why not share it? You’re adding valuable information to the ether. There’s nothing wrong with writing about something people already know about. You’re reminding people of its importance. Think about it, wouldn’t it be hard to find a topic that no one knew anything about? Even if you did, you’d have a hard time getting people to believe what you were saying.

2.    Write a “how to” post. People love tutorials. Period. So if you write blog about “How to Capture Your Target Audience’s Attention with Five Key Words,” people will listen.

3.    Write a human interest piece. Think of something cool going on at your place of business and write about it. Your corporate culture is part of your brand’s identity. Let people know how amazingly awesome your co-workers are. For instance, just yesterday our Senior Account Manager, Erin Schmidt, here at RBOA reached her six-month anniversary. That’s something worth celebrating!

If you never make yourself start writing, you never will. What are you waiting for? Go forth and blog!
